CHESS Homeless had a once in a lifetime opportunity to increase bedspaces to single homeless adults at one of our existing sites ‘Turning Point’. We have increased the accommodation from 9 to 24 units offering a significantly improved living style and set up of accommodation.
On the right is a picture of the drawing for the new development, which is now home to 24 new modular self-contained homes built providing a private and self-contained place to live, whilst addressing the issues that saw them become homeless, with the help of trained support and life skills staff available on site.
The choice for modular housing was due to the short timescales in which we had to deliver this project through the ‘Single Homeless Accommodation Programme’ (SHAP) funding, in addition to raising the extra £1.7m required to oush the project over the finish line.
The units are fully equipped and easily adaptable to ensure that people with health conditions or disabilities can live as independently as possible. This will also help them to regain control of their lives for when they are ready to move on and live independently.
The existing communal area and office space will remain but eventually be improved and we hope to raise an additional £108,000 to provide solar power to the site making it more energy efficient.
Turning Point was officially opened early April 2025 by Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst, the Lord Lieutenant of Essex, and we look forward to welcoming our first residents in the next few weeks.
