Host Your Own Sleep Out 2021 – Chess Homeless

Host Your Own Sleep Out 2021

Host your own Sleep Out
Families, Work Places, Youth Groups and Clubs

If you can’t make our BIG Sleep Out on 15th October 2021, then why not host your own at another time and location that may be more suitable to your group.

With the impact of Covid during 2020 and cancellation of all of our fundraising activities, we are calling on the good people of Essex to help us raise much needed funds by taking part and organising your own Sleep Out for your group. It’s open to anyone providing you have permission; brownies, cubs, scouts, guides, youth groups, schools, colleges and families (those under the age of 18 must ensure an adult/carer is with you).

You can choose to brave the elements with just a sleeping bag and cardboard box or get the tent out and camp somewhere with friends and family. Either way, make a night of it and help raise valuable funds for local homeless people as you sleep!

Here at CHESS Homeless we believe that everyone should have a roof over their head and a place they can call home. No one should be left out sleeping on the streets. We provide a programme of change to help homeless adults get back on their feet to live independently and where possible to get back into education or employment. The money you raise through your Sleep Out will go towards helping us fulfil our mission to ensure that people who find themselves homeless are supported in ways that enable them to move forward purposefully and in good health.

We would be happy to come along and tell you more about CHESS and the work that we do in the wider community so why not get in touch before taking part in your event. Drop us an email at

Some simple tips to Hosting Your Own Sleep Out

Decide on a suitable date/location and invite people to take part with you if you are doing it as a group. You can set your own target and raise as much sponsorship as you can. Set up a fundraising page using an online platform such as Justgiving, Virgin Money Giving or Go Fund Me, or if you prefer the old fashioned method you can download a Sponsorship Form here.

Some points to consider:

  • find a safe place in a property owned by your organisation or somewhere your group has the right to be or your own home
  • ensure you have appropriate insurance, a full risk assessment and first aid provisions/first aider
  • provide permission forms for all attendees under 18
  • ensure the correct ratio of qualified adults to under 18’s
  • be safe and have fun!

Once your plans are made, tell as many people as you can and share it on your social media pages so they can sponsor you.  Don’t forget to tag us @chesshomeless (@chess.homeless on Instagram) so we can share it as well. Often local news and radio may also be interested to hear about what you are doing and want to write a feature on you
