Sleep Out 2019 - A night under the stars! - Chess Homeless

Sleep Out 2019 – A night under the stars!

What's involved

Every year CHESS hosts its own Sleep Out in the grounds of Chelmsford Cathedral and last year’s participants raised over £20,000 for us. This year we would like to raise even more and make it our biggest event ever. Why not join us and experience what it is like to sleep rough for a night?

Sleeping out for the night might seem like fun, but for many people this is an every night reality! CHESS Homeless works to relieve homelessness and hardship amongst single adults in Chelmsford and Essex through the provision of support services and temporary accommodation.

CHESS provides a 9-bedroom night shelter along with shared move on accommodation. Here we provide a safe place to stay along with a hot meal, drinks, hygiene and laundry facilities, with access to Support Workers and a Counsellor. With our shared housing we can support up to 32 individuals at any one time.

We aim to support individuals from the moment they step through the door into our night shelter until they move on into their own independent accommodation.

Anyone can take part in the Sleep Out, however under 18’s must be accompanied by a responsible adult, who must also complete the registration either online or on the night, and accompany them for the Sleep Out. This is a great event for a group to take part in and raise funds together.

By getting involved, you will help CHESS to support more people on a journey towards moving away from homelessness, from getting off the streets, to living in a new home, learning new skills and securing employment. The money you raise will help vulnerable local people to live independently and also help CHESS reach their aims in continuing to change lives.

How to take part

When:  Friday 22nd November – Saturday 23rd November

Where:   Chelmsford Cathedral

Time:    7.30pm – 7.30am

Registration is free and now open. Due to the popularity of this event we would encourage you to pre-register your place in advance. If you are not able to pre-register you can just turn up on the night and register.

We ask that you raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship or more if you can.

We will be providing some hot food and drink options for a small suggested donation, so please bring a small amount of cash with you.

A raffle will be held on the night to raise even more funds towards CHESS, so please support this by buying some tickets.  There will be some lovely prizes which would have been donated from various individuals and organisations. Again, you will only need a few pounds to buy tickets.

Download our sponsor form here and get friends, family and work colleagues to sponsor you for a night under the stars. Alternatively set up your own fundraising page via our partner site

If you cannot make our SleepOut then why not:
Host your own Sleep Out
Families, Work Places, Youth Groups and Clubs

If you can’t attend our Sleep Out on the 22nd November, then why not host your own. You can do this during November, or another time that may be more suitable to your group.

We are calling on the good people of Essex to take part. It’s open to anyone providing you have permission; brownies, cubs, scouts, guides, youth groups, schools, colleges and families. (those under the age of 18 must ensure an adult/carer is with you).

You can choose to brave the elements with just a sleeping bag and cardboard box or get the tent out and camp in the garden with friends and family. Either way, make a night of it and help raise valuable funds for local homeless people as you sleep!

If you are a school or club then why not get in touch and invite us along to an assembly, before taking part in your event

Here at CHESS Homeless we believe that everyone should have a roof over their head and a place they can call home. No one should be left out sleeping on the streets. We provide a programme of change to help single homeless adults get back on their feet to live independently and where possible to get back into education or employment. The money you raise through your Sleep Out will go towards helping single homeless adults from Chelmsford and Essex.

How to Host Your Own Sleep Out

Decide on a suitable date and make it lots of fun. You can set your own target and raise as much sponsorship as you can. Either set up a fundraising page on or download a Sponsorship Form here.

Some points to consider:

  • find a safe place in a property owned by your organisation or somewhere your group has the right to be or your own home.
  • ensure you have appropriate insurance, a full risk assessment and first aid provisions (with first aider on site).
  • provide permission forms for all attendees under 18
  • ensure the correct ratio of qualified adults to under 18’s
  • be safe and have fun!
